Looking to start 2021 in a new role? It can be daunting trying to find the secret sauce that will make you stand out from the crowd when applying for that perfect position. So we’ve asked Chantal Kisten from our iSEE CHURCH Brisbane West church, who is a HR guru (and former FAVOUR MAG cover gal), for her top tips on catching the recruiters eye!
When you’re tasked with screening hundreds of resumes in pursuit of finding the “perfect” candidate, you quietly hope for the words on the page to jump out at you and yell “look no further, I’m everything you looking for”. Very seldom does that happen. More often than not it’s because candidates have failed to present the most important information in prominent positions. Here are a few tips that will make your resume stand out from the rest:
1. Look for keywords in the job advert and edit your resume to suit.
The ad has all the information you need to assess and decide if this is the job for you. Once that box is ticked, you need to edit your resume to align with what the recruiter is asking for. Ensure that your resume is clear and concise, and highlight keywords to catch the reader’s attention.
2. Don’t be modest. This is not the time to be subtle or vague. Use power words such as “achieved,” “earned,” “completed” or “accomplished.” If your resume is too long and wordy then the recruiter might move on and you may miss your chance. Instead of listing every task that you performed, select your top three or four most important achievements in each role you’ve held, with focus on achievements that align with the job advert.
3. Cover letter and formatting.
Use headings, subtitles and keep it simple. Take time to ensure that your resume is free of grammatical or spelling errors. Use a cover letter that responds directly to what the recruiter is asking for.
Prior to an interview, research the company and ensure that you know who you are meeting. Make a list of questions to ask that show your interest but also quietly highlighting your knowledge of the company or industry. At an interview, arrive early but not too early. Relax and answer the questions to the best of your ability. Remember to read the ad and your resume prior to the interview so your responses are consistent. Lastly, don’t forget that you are a child of the most high, if it is God’s will, you will get the job, if not, then it was never meant to be.
